Hiraizumi, Iwate – the legacy of Golden Capital for 100 years (2/3)

“The Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Center” will show you the brief history of this legacy town. For 100 years, the Hiraizumi was governed by the Fujiwaras, of three governers.

The Kamakura Shogunate governed the most of south area of Japanese main island, but the north part of Tohoku area (upper side of the map), particularly current Akita and Iwate areas kept independence.
The first, Fujiwara no Kiyohira. He established the government and Chuson-ji temple (renown with its annex of “Golden Hall”). His concept is to govern the area in peace with faith of Buddhism.
The second, Fujiwara no Motohira. He developed Motsuji-temple (with Pure Land Garden), tried to go along with Kyoto (central government) using affluent gold, and expanded the territory.
The third, Fujiwara no Hidehira. He managed politices with several political struggle in Kyoto and became “the King of North”, but his “kingdom” was invaded by Kamakura Shogunate to be demolished.
