Sakata, Yamagata Pref. – the City of Kitamae-Bune (Circuling Trading Ship in 17 – 19th Century) (1/2)
Sakata, currently small town with 100,000 population, was a such prosperous port city. The trading between both Kyoto (former capital) and Hokkaido made an billionaire Honma-family, who contributed to the development of the city through public facilities including libraries, or temples etc. Sakai was also known as the place of TV drama “Oshin”, as where she works.

The parade floats offered to a shrine for the festival by Honma-clan, following “Gion Festival” in Kyoto. As such, the trading ships brought cultures in addition to trading items.

Rice barrells. A barell contains regularly 60Kg (120 lbs). It was used for strength contest sometimes held in festivals.
